ADOLESCENT TRENDS
Prevalence of Depressive Symptoms
Nearly 40 percent of high school students reported feeling sad or hopeless nearly every day for two or more weeks. For teen girls, this rate is about 53 percent, indicating significant gender disparity in mental health distress.
Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors
Increasing trend, with female and LGBTQ+ students more likely to experience suicidal thoughts. Over 50% LGBTQ+ youth report experiencing poor mental health and approximately 19% reported suicide attempts in past year.
Anxiety Disorders
About 32 percent of adolescents suffer with overall anxiety in the United States. Diagnoses of anxiety and depression in children have increased 30% in recent years, accelerated since 2020.
Suicide Risk Trend
Among adolescents 12-17, serious thoughts of suicide declined from around 13 percent in 2021 to around 10 percent in 2024. Suicide plans and attempts also declined but remain at significant risks.
Factors Influencing Mental Health
Social media use (three or more hours/day) doubles the risk of poor mental health, and a rise in academic pressure contributes, too. Social media and academic stress are major contributors to adolescent mental health challenges.
Emergency Visits
ED visits for self-harm and suicidal ideation, especially among girls, remain elevated above pre-2020 levels, indicating sustained crisis-level distress among youth, particularly females.
